Texas takes an aggressive approach to returning money to the people. Every year the state comptroller publishes the unclaimed property list. The list is shared with newspapers, put out at the state fair and published online. The Texas unclaimed property website was responsible for returning $163 Million to Texans last year.
In addition to making the information easy to access, the Comptrollers office reaches out to many state and local governments to notifiy them of their unclaimed funds. Several cities are owed amounts around $1,000. The city of Austin however, has over $15,000 in unclaimed funds.
